HistoryEdit

This section utilises information taken from Ranpha's route where appropriate and may not be considered canon.

Early LifeEdit

Ranpha was born to a poor family that competed fiercely but were very close. She was the eldest sibling and, having to provide for the rest of the family, chose to leave home and enlist in the military. At some point during her academy training she became acquainted with Milfeulle Sakuraba and competed fiercely with her, although this rivalry went unnoticed by the latter. The two eventually became close friends.

Moon Angel WingEdit

At the time of the coup d'etat, Ranpha was already serving with the Moon Angel Wing and was dispatched to recover Tact Mayers along with Milfeulle and Forte. She was subsequently placed under Tact's command and charged with escorting Shiva Transbaal to the loyalist rally point on the planet Rhome. During this time the Elle Ciel was repeatedly dogged by the Hell Hounds and one among their number, Guinness Stout, singled Ranpha out as a rival, a notion that she violently rejected. She also remained hostile towards her new commander, particularly following an incident where he allegedly peeked at her while she was showering. Tact denied all knowledge of the incident and vowed to find the true culprit, eventually proving his innocence in a confrontation with a Shapeshifting Probe. Over the course of the search, Ranpha opened up to Tact and eventually came to accept him as a trustworthy person and capable commander. At the same time she began to develop feelings for Tact and he eventually reciprocated by asking her to be his dance partner at the grand ball on Fargo. Their budding relationship was threatened shortly before the last battle of the coup d'etat when Tact found himself unable to keep pace romantically with Ranpha but the pair reconciled after he finally found the words to express his true feelings. After the war she continued to serve aboard the Elle Ciel with Tact on his new assigment to the frontier.

In Moonlit Lovers, Ranpha's relationship with Tact was sorely tested by the arrival of Chitose Karasuma aboard the Elle Ciel. This was due to two misunderstandings: first, Ranpha saw that Chitose's room had no furniture, and second, Chitose ordered a very small meal in the cafeteria. From these two facts, Ranpha mistakenly assumed that Chitose was very poor and came from a life of immense hardship because of that. Due to this, combined with a romantic movie Tact and Ranpha previously saw where the hero ends up with a poor heroine, Ranpha felt sorry for Chitose and abruptly broke up with Tact, deliberately trying to romantically pair him up with Chitose. Eventually, Tact cleared up the misunderstanding, but Ranpha still felt guilty at her own overzealous and hasty romantic behavior throughout the relationship, and continued to avoid him until circumstances drove Tact to take extreme steps to demonstrate his feelings once more, proving that he could "catch up" to Ranpha and Ranpha did not have to slow down. When the quarrel had been settled she had no further problems with Chitose, having already accepted her as a member of the Moon Angel Wing, and finally Ranpha joined Tact to pilot the GA-007 and end the threat of the resurgent coup d'etat forces, this time under the command of the Valfask, Nephelia. Satisfied that the imminent Valfask invasion had been delayed, Tact and Ranpha were able to spend time together on an unnamed resort planet.

In Eternal Lovers, their relationship managed to hold steady but was threatened once again by the pressures of war. As Tact's duties preparing for the Valfask invasion separated him from Ranpha for increasing periods of time, she began to fear that he had resumed his infamous skirt-chasing tendencies by pursuing the beautiful EDEN emissary Lushati. He was also forced to shoot down the Kung Fu Fighter to prevent it from falling into enemy hands, causing Ranpha to strike him reflexively whenever he touches her despite knowing that he had no other alternative. She overcame this setback after she was trapped on a collapsing bridge and was forced to jump into Tact's arms to escape. Towards the end of the war, Tact mentioned that he would like to meet Ranpha's siblings, as he would have to get to know his future brothers and sisters-in-law, which Ranpha correctly interpreted as a rather indirect marriage proposal.

PersonalityEdit

Ranpha is a proud and sometimes harsh woman who can be difficult to approach but is kind to people she considers her friends and is willing to put their feelings and needs before her own. She favours a direct approach to problem solving, often defusing situations with an application of brute force that coincides well with the Kung Fu Fighter's abilities. Likewise Ranpha expects others to be as direct in their dealings with her; she values action and dislikes people who hesitate or are negligent in their duties, hence her reluctance to trust Tact when she first met him. At the same time she occasionally worries that her tomboyish behaviour obscures her more feminine traits. When not training she enjoys entertaining soap opera fantasies about her ideal boyfriend, shopping, or telling fortunes for her friends. Ranpha's love of spices is well known on board the Elle Ciel as the dining room keeps its Ranpha Special, a curry with 1,000 times the spice, on the menu at all times and the existence of a Ranpha Special #2 involving noodles and a Ranpha Special #3 involving pizza are alluded to. She is the worst player of Blackjack aboard the Elle Ciel.

Compared to the other Angels, Ranpha is extremely quick to anger but just as quick to forget and does not generally hold grudges. She is very aware that she is beautiful and makes no apologies for the fact. Ranpha is also very passionate about her relationships and of all the Angels, she is the most expressive and enthusiastic when it comes to showing her love for Tact. It is a significant point of conflict for the pair when Tact is unable to match her pace and intensity.

An optional free time segment with Milfeulle and Mint at one point in Galaxy Angel Moonlit Lovers reveals that Ranpha makes "assumptions" almost like a disease, and when in the middle of one of her assumptions she almost never listens to the input of those around her. This causes problems in Galaxy Angel, when she mistakenly assumes Tact peeped on her naked in the shower; Galaxy Angel Moonlit Lovers, when she mistakenly assumes Chitose is poor and tries to pair Tact up with her out of pity; and Galaxy Angel Eternal Lovers, when she mistakenly assumes that Tact is showing romantic interest in Lushati. However, those pursuing Ranpha's heart have less need to worry about this than they think: while Ranpha does not listen to what others say to her to disabuse her of her assumptions, if her boyfriend demonstrates a sufficient show of love or action Ranpha will give up those assumptions on her own.

While she can occasionally appear selfish and greedy, Ranpha values her family above almost all other things in her life and detests people who think only of themselves and not their own families. She is also capable of regretting and apologizing for her selfishness if she thinks she's gone too far; for example, if paired with Tact in Galaxy Angel Moonlit Lovers, she apologizes for always wanting to go too fast in their romantic relationship (however, Tact insists that it was his own fault for going too slow, negating Ranpha's apology).

In Moonlit Lovers, we also learn at the beginning of her route that Ranpha values being full of energy in life, hating to sit still and "do nothing."

Other MediaEdit

AnimeEdit

Ranpha Franboise is a young, tough woman of 18 who enjoys practicing martial arts and magic. Flirtatious and vain, she is obsessed with her looks and attracting men and their money. On her head is a pair of bulbous hair clips which function as melee weapons, machine guns, and jet engines, among other things.

When she was a child, Ranpha discovered a broken robot doll discarded on a trash heap. Naming it Stevia, she took it home to repair and raise. Their relationship was generally very good, except that Stevia had the tendency to become jealous whenever Ranpha was having fun without it. It would respond to this apparent neglect by attacking her, especially at important times like meeting a potential boyfriend. Eventually, Ranpha could not stand being with that robot anymore and left home to join the military wihout telling anyone.

Ranpha has a fascination in aspects of Chinese culture, which is notable in her style of dress and room decorations, but is most fond of Chinese martial arts. She has been an excellent fighter since childhood, capable of besting the toughest and most numerous opponents in hand-to-hand combat. Her incredible strength even allows her to lift heavy loads and crack concrete. She can be rather dangerous, however, as she tends to strike at people she finds annoying or in her way. She most often gets into fights with Forte, who happens to be the only one who can match Ranpha in fighting prowess.

Not entirely matter over mind, Ranpha also dabbles in mysticism. She is quite skilled in fortune-telling (to the point of actually causing events to happen by saying they will) and has shown some aptitude in folk medicine, though some attempts at necromancy did not go very well. A common affinity for magic (and a bar fight) associates Ranpha with Kahlua Marjoram, who is by her own right a capable sorcerer and alchemist.

Ranpha is constantly seeking love, as evident by her fascination of dating sims and various injuries received going after a handsome face. A major goal in her life is to marry a handsome, preferrably rich, man. Although she has had several boyfriends and almost married a few times, she is generally unlucky in her pursuits and often remain single.

At the age of 22, Ranpha had finally settled down in marriage, divorcing shortly after and joining Forte on a road trip.

MangaEdit

A member of the Angel Troupe searching for "Mr. Right", her ideal boyfriend. At first, she didn't trust Takuto fully; she does not call him by his first name, she calls him a pervert, and she freely beats him up whenever he annoys her. Later on when she saw that Takuto genuinelly cared for her, she started having a crush on him; this was lessened a bit however when he said that he likes everyone in the Angel Troupe, she then beats him up once again. Ranpha's crush on Takuto grew when he accidentally kissed her. It slightly damages her relationship with Milfeulle as she misinterprets their kiss, however she denies that it was a real kiss. Even though she loves Takuto, she is willing to give him up because from her point of view, it seems that Milfeulle and Takuto like each other; Ranpha even jokes to Milfeulle that she will take away Takuto if Milfeulle doesn't confess to him soon. In volume 3 of Galaxy Angel Beta, she casually tells Takuto "I like you" after returning from a trip. She then cheerfully announces that she is going on another trip and runs out of the room, leaving him stunned.

Behind-the-scenesEdit

  • Ranpha's Japanese voice actor is Yukari Tamura, she is played by Yuka Koide in the musicals and her American voice actress are Nicole Leroux and Tabitha St. Germain (S & X).
  • Ranpha's last name likely comes from the liquor crème de framboise, which is made from raspberries, as framboise is French for raspberry.
  • The kanji for Ranpha's first name, if written with the character for west in front of it, like 西蘭花, happens to mean broccoli in Chinese.
  • There a joke in the manga and game that Ranpha would not mind Eonia being her boyfriend if he was not evil. In the Manga there was a side comic page that had Eonia kidnapping Ranpha for her to become his wife. This is mention again in GAII manga 4kome if Ranpha was instead the gatekeeper, she tells Verel that she already been kidnapped once before by Eonia.
